What makes a woodworking project intermediate?
An "intermediate" woodworking project is a little less straightforward than a beginner level project. It might have more steps, more complicated steps, or use more specific tools.
Beginner level woodworking projects usually minimize the number of tools required, the amount of materials used, and the complexity of steps.
Intermediate level woodworking projects start using more tools and tools that might not be owned by the general hobbyist woodworker.
Think back to when you were a kid and your dad had a number of tools in the garage for fixing things or building minor things, but didn't actually do woodworking. He probably had a drill, sander, circular saw and maybe a miter saw if he was really adventurous. Those are beginner-level tools.
For us, we started out with a drill, hand saw and miter box, and sander on the screened porch of our condo. We were able to put together some signs for our wedding and a coffee table out of driftwood, but it wasn't until we moved to our first house and bought a miter saw and table saw that we really got into more intermediate-level woodworking.
Intermediate level woodworking projects also consist of more difficult woodworking skills. Intermediate level woodworking projects are going to be more than straight cuts and butt joints. There will be some more complex joinery, angles and tapering that you wouldn't see a beginner comfortable with.
