Looking for a home maintenance checklist for your bathroom? Here is everything that homeowners need to know about bathroom maintenance!

Home maintenance can be one of the most dreaded aspects of home ownership for many people.

I mean, there is a lot of appeal to having a landlord, who takes complete ownership of these maintenance tasks for your home.

But, once you own your own home, you've got to take it over yourself.

There are a lot of different home maintenance tasks to keep track of (which is why we have a very convenient home maintenance printable binder for you!)

But, in this article, I want to focus on bathroom maintenance. Bathrooms are different from other rooms in your home because they have a lot of tile and a lot of plumbing. Both of which can lead to major maintenance problems down the line.

One of the best ways to prevent hugely expensive home repairs is to do regular maintenance. So, here are our suggested bathroom maintenance tasks!

Bathroom Maintenance Checklist

Bathroom maintenance serves a few purposes:

  • Preventing mold and mildew
  • Avoiding major plumbing issues and/or water damage
  • Extending the lifespan of fixtures and surfaces
  • Maintaining a clean and hygienic space

Here are the essential tasks that you should be doing to keep your bathroom in top shape, broken down by frequency!

Daily Bathroom Maintenance Tasks

The most important daily bathroom task is just to keep the space clean.

No, I'm not suggesting you scrub daily, but wiping up spills, wiping the shower doors, and using a bath mat can go a long way.

Keep a cup next to the sink so you can wash away toothpaste residue before it gets stuck on.

And finally, keep your eye on areas like under the faucet or behind the toilet, so if there is a leak you will notice it as soon as possible!

Weekly Bathroom Maintenance Checklist

Weekly, you can do a bit more deep cleaning in your bathroom. This can include:

  • Scrubbing the toilet bowl and cleaning the seat and tank
  • Wiping mirrors and fixtures to remove smudges and water spots
  • Cleaning the shower head, faucet handles, and tiles
  • Emptying trash bins and cleaning them if needed
  • Refilling essentials like soap, toilet paper, and cleaning supplies

By tackling these tasks weekly, you are less likely to have a major issue build up.

Monthly Bathroom Maintenance Tasks

Once a month, tackle bigger bathroom tasks. I like to do one a week so it's not a huge insurmountable task of having to do them all at once.

Deep clean by scrubbing, not just wiping, the tile. Especially clean the grout with an old toothbrush or grout cleaner. I love using a grout pen!

Wipe down your fixtures - faucets, shower heads, drain plugs - to keep them looking their best. I like to use a clorox wipe to kill all the germs.

Wipe down your exhaust fan - usually on the ceiling. You can use a duster to do this easily in ten seconds.

Always keep your eyes open for any signs of mold or mildew, especially in corners, tiles, and other the sink. If you see anything suspicious, treat it with bleach ASAP.

Annual Bathroom Maintenance Tasks

A few times a year, take on these extra tasks!

  • Inspecting caulk around the tub, shower, and sink and re-caulking if needed
  • Testing and replacing any damaged shower or sink seals
  • Cleaning or replacing the shower curtain or liner
  • Replacing old or faulty fixtures like shower heads, faucets, or toilet components
  • Checking and replacing any worn-out rubber stripping on shower doors
  • Deep cleaning behind large fixtures like the toilet or vanity

By tackling these bathroom tasks you can help to prevent a major issue from building up.
