I was really excited to test out my favorite 8 gray wood stain colors on 6 types of wood so you can see exactly how they each look!

Weathered Gray is a common name for wood stains - almost every stain brand has one. They are always cool toned light gray.
This is meant to mimic the look of weather-aged wood. It was a super popular color when farmhouse and rustic were the rage.
Now, the thing you want to look out for with these stains is too much purple or blue undertones.
It's also worth noting that the can I grabbed is a COLOR WASH which is meant to be layered over other paint or stain for an aged look. So, it is lighter intentionally.

How does Minwax Color Wash Weathered Gray stain look on oak?
Oak is a really beautiful wood with natural red undertones.
Weathered Gray gave oak a nice bleached look. I actually really love the lightened look that still lets the grain shine through! This is a hit for me!
How does Minwax Color Wash Weathered Gray stain look on pine?
Pine wood has natural yellow tones with some slightly darker graining.
Pine tends to stain splotchy and this color REALLY went on splotchy, even compared to the other colors. It's not a hit for me!
How does Minwax Color Wash Weathered Gray stain look on poplar?
Poplar has natural green and some purple undertones.
I really think that the blue of the stain and the green of the wood combined to make a gross color here. It just isn't a great combination!
How does Minwax Color Wash Weathered Gray stain look on plywood?
Birch plywood is very light, almost white, with very light tan grain lines. It has beautiful flowing grain lines.
Plywood usually absorbs stain really nice and evenly and I love how it turned out with Weathered Gray! I think It looks really light, bright, and a pretty gray color. This is the perfect use of this stain!
How does Minwax Color Wash Weathered Gray stain look on a 2x4?
2x4s are usually very light wood with darker knots and holes.
You don't usually stain 2x4s, but I think that the wood was really nicely complemented by the weathered oak color. It's a great pairing!
How does Minwax Color Wash Weathered Gray stain look on white wood?
White wood is a soft, light wood with a lot of knots. It often takes stain splotchy and this was no exception.
This stain barely showed up on the white wood and didn't take evenly. It might be ok with several more coats or layered over another state, but like this it is a no from me!
