It is usually cheaper to build a simple bed frame compared to buying a pre-made bed. However, for the best bang for your buck, check thrift stores or Facebook marketplace!

What type of wood is best to use to build a bed frame?

You can use any sturdy wood to make a bed frame, species doesn’t matter as much as thickness. You generally want wood at least 2″ thick to create enough support.

Do you have to use a box spring?

Most platform bed frames are designed to not need a box spring. You will just need to be sure that your bed frame has enough support to hold up the mattress without needing the support of the box spring.
