Slatted Plant Stand

We built this slatted plant stand to sit just below window height to hold small, potted plants. This slatted plant stand is easy and effective for indoors!

We built the entire thing with scrap wood for my mother-in-law who had lots of plants on their window sills. This slatted plant stand solution allows for beautiful display!

Slatted Plant Stand

This project was made entirely from scrap boards. If you don't have a scrap wood hoard pile like me, you might have to buy the boards, but it's still not much wood.

What you need:

• 4 feet of 2x4
• 4 feet of 1x4 for slats
• 3 feet of 1x4 for supports

Step one: Make the Supports

I started by cutting a 2x4 into two 24" pieces and then cutting those in half on the table saw to serve as legs.

Next I started working on some 1x4s. I first cut four 1" wide by 36" long pieces, then four 1" wide by 9" long pieces to serve as supports.

Step two: Make the Slats

Then I cut down my slats. I cut 24 slats 12" long by 2" wide. You could use any ¾" thick wood you have lying around.

I stained all of the slats with Rust-Oleum Varathane's Bleached Blue stain. I absolutely love this line of blue stains. The blue pulls out the grain in the wood and adds color while allowing the wood to still stand out.

Pairing this with the Varathane Early American dark brown color on the legs and support make everything pop. These were the same colors I used for our DIY wooden name puzzle for Luke and they turned out great there too.

Step three: Construct Base

Using a 2x4 to set the height, I used a brad nailer to attach the 36" support to the bottom of two legs and did the same on the other two. I then set the 9" support on top of those on the inside of the legs to attach the two sides together.

Then I repeated on the top of the legs with the other supports to make the stand.

Step four: Nail Slats

Next I nailed the slats into place evenly spaced across the bottom, then repeated on the top level.

Step five: load with plants

This slatted plant stand turned out amazing. It's a great indoor plant stand for multiple plants.

I love the look and functionality of it. The contrasting stain colors really showcase the features of the stand.

This slatted plant stand is super easy to recreate using our downloadable woodworking plans and could be built with scrap would or a few pieces from the store.
