Cool Closet: Michelle Orsi

Hey y'all! It's been forever since we've shared a Cool Closet around here, and I'm so excited to share this one with you today.

I am the owner of two small, but well-organized, closets, so seeing Michelle's beauty really made me grin. I love anything color coded and her shoes are just amazing. She is serious proof that you don't need to have a big space to have everything organized and pretty! I asked her some questions to learn more about what she has going on!

Why do you love your closet?  I love that everything is on display & I can visualize my different pieces to pair together when getting dressed each day.  I have a wall to wall closet, where I store my shoes, dresses, pants & numerous tops.  I display tote bags on top of my desk & store various jackets and hats on the back of my door.  In a corner, I have a bookcase that I turned into storage for scarves, smaller sized bags & jewelry.

What did you DIY to save money?  There are lots of scarf hangers, bag racks & jewelry storage pieces available in stores, but rather spending on all of those items, I use the space that I already have to create storage and display areas for my accessories.  Mini hooks (available at CVS & the like) display my necklaces, while bookcase shelves have become the home for my smaller clutch bags & scarves.

How does your closet help you stay organized? Not-so-secret facts about me: I am a perfectionist & a neat freak.  When it comes to my desk at work, my room and my closet, everything has a specific place.  I can’t go to bed at night until everything is put away where it belongs.  Staying this organized is a blessing in disguise, because I rarely am scrambling to find something at the last minute.

What is your favorite thing about your closet? My favorite thing about my closet is obviously the stuff in it! I work hard to keep everything neat & organized.  I love that everything is so easy to see.  It makes it hard to forget about an item, so I am able to keep lots of pieces in rotation. This definitely comes in handy as a style blogger - no one would want to see the same few pieces over & over again!

What is your favorite item in your closet? This question is so hard! I can’t pick just one item! I LOVE my shoe collection.  I’m a bit obsessed with shoes of all types – flats, heels, boots, booties, sneakers, etc.  Right now, of course, I'm all about boots & booties because of the cold weather.  My favorite type of shoe is probably a well-made flat.  Colors, like black, red, and gold are must haves for everyone's closet, but I also like unexpected colors & patterns, like leopard or my mint pair!

What's your #1 tip to others organizing their closets? Organize by type & then by color.  For example, I hang as many tops as I can organized by color.  I separate dresses & group shoes together by color as well. Rather than flipping through my entire closet, I am able to quickly find what I’m looking for in the morning.   This tip probably made the biggest overall difference in the way I pick out my outfits in the morning.  I highly recommend it for anyone with a closet full of clothes!

Thanks for stopping by, Michelle, and be sure to click over to her blog and social media!

Love your organized closets both of you!!! I have very little space but I know it can be done with some ingenuity. I used to be extremely organized in the past: 1500 CDs alphabetized, books, by author (last name first of course), closet was also by color and season. Now however, with some life changes, things are well, in dire need of some crafty new solutions. I have no idea how I've acquired so much more stuff when I barely shop anymore!! Couple of questions : I had my sliding doors removed a while, but then put new ones back (teeney bedroom), but I can never get to the middle of my closet!! Any suggestions? Also, I succumbed to pressure from others and threw out all of my shoe boxes and ordered cases of the clear-Ish ones from the container store. I even put huge printed p-touch labels with designer and brief description on them, but I can never ever find my shoes anymore and I have forgotten what I even have!! Plus pulling out the plastic box on the bottom, say, is so annoying, the lid, the whole thing. I end up wearing the same pair now. I live everyone's shoe and bag displays BUT: I like keeping my bags in the cloth bags they came in, and I keep my shoe bags too, for travel, etc. My NYC walk up is small and really needs creativity to make things work, but I can't imagine not having the dust bags for my handbags and shoes... Though of course it's again harder to find. Help??? Xo

I took the doors off or my closet because I had the same problem - if the doors slide and don't swing open, the middle is really useless.I love not having doors on mine (I hung a curtain). What about an over the door shoe rack - maybe on the back of your bathroom door? If you want to keep shoes in dust bags then maybe pin a picture on each one? My clothes aren't nice enough to come with dust bags 🙂 but I use an ikea shelf down the center to "display" and store my shoes. I would imagine that clear shoe boxes would turn into a tupperware drawer horror story, haha.

The clear shoe boxes are the bane of my existence. My mother kept nagging me about them every time she came over, and I finally relented and it's a nightmare. The shoes don't have to be in the bags, I'll never find them that way either and that seems like it would be another giant mess. There's just so much dust constantly in Certain types of NYC apartments like mine. Older buildings in the village with wooden floors, walk/ups? It's insane. I have no idea where it comes from, like daily. Plus I have a dog now so that's an issue. My closet space is small so I can't walk in, unfortunately. There is an upper shelf. Perhaps I can display then there... But I'd need more than just that surface space. There are bags there now, again, impossible to get to. There is no over the door space btw, and I actually hate over the door. Do you think putting carpet or sisel in the closet might help? Can I see a pic of your curtain? I'd love to have non sliding doors so I could use the space on the inside of the closet doors, but I live in s rental and I've already put too much of my own money into it!! I think non sliding doors in my bedroom closet would have to be custom.

That sounds like a really complicated situation. Here at the bottom you can see my curtains. I added a rod and they are actually shower curtains that I hung with clip on loops.

I agree, you don't want to sink cash into a rental. I own my place and didn't want to spend the money on french style doors. Those sliding doors are terrible, I don't know why anyone puts them in!

I'm so jealous of this closet! Beautiful 🙂 At my last apartment I had a great walk in closet, then I moved to the area I WANTED to live in, but unfortunately came with a much smaller closet, hahah!

I know! Closets are such a make or break it for me, I remember my freshman dorm had only this little freestanding cabinet thing and it was the WORST! You will have to stare at pretty closets with envy as you fold your things and put them in drawers until you move somewhere with a great closet 🙂

Morgan, so saw you pics, warlier. I don't think I have the space for that. I have some ideals, but what would you suggest to replace the sliding drawers that don't look cheap or unsophisticated?

Your options to replace the sliding doors would be to go without doors, to hang a curtain like I did, or to add an inexpensive bifold door like this: http://amzn.to/1ZQPxFV though I am not experienced hanging that kind of door so I am not sure how difficult it would be, but it does allow access to the entire closet.
