DIY wooden spider mobile

This hanging wooden spider mobile is a great way to add a spooky touch to your Halloween decor! Make this and surprise your friends!

Spiders dangling from the ceiling is a classic Halloween decor option and this project allows you to have them dangle from anywhere!

I made this hanging wood spider mobile to be hung from a tree, hook, or light fixture to add a fun spirit to your Halloween decor.

You can also do this project with bats as well to give a look of them flying through the night. Either way, this is a quick and easy project and you can make it all your own!

Hanging Halloween spider mobile

This spider mobile was made a little easier for me because I used my xTool P2 laser cutter to cut out the intricate spider design, but you can also use a jig saw or scroll saw and make them a little less precise.

And bats would certainly be easier with a jigsaw than the spiders, but decide exactly what you want!

If these spiders are too small, make this GIANT spider from playground balls and pool noodles!

Materials needed

Here's everything you need to make this fun hanging spider mobile for Halloween!

  • ¼" scrap plywood
  • ¾" scrap board
  • Black spray paint
  • String

These mini disco ball spiders would pair great with this project!

Step one: cut spiders

Start out by cutting out the spiders. I went with several different sized spiders so that they wouldn't all be uniform.

I used my laser cutter, so it was really simple to pull in a design and let the laser do the work for me, especially on the small legs. You can also make a slightly more rudimentary design and cut it out with a jig saw if that's all you have.

Once those were done, I cut an oval of wood out of a scrap board. Then, I drilled a small hole into the back end of each spider and a corresponding hole for each in the board.

Step two: paint

Set up a good painting station and paint the spiders black. I used a black spray paint I had on hand from previous projects and made sure to get both sides of the spiders since they will spin around.

I also painted the scrap board black as well. You could do this differently, but I wanted that similar look and for it to blend in. Let everything dry fully then move on to step three.

Step three: string up spiders

I used the string to thread through the hole in each spider and tied a knot so it wouldn't slip through the hole. Then, I threaded the other end through the board and tied a knot there as well.

Adding string to spiders

I tied them off at different lengths so that the spiders wouldn't all be dangling at the exact same height. This string is supposed to look like the spider's web hanging them down, so they could all be coming down at different lengths.

Finally, I strung a string through two additional holes on each end of the board as a hanger.

Step four: hang on display

You can hang this spider mobile up anywhere you want people to see it. If you hang it outside, the wind might tangle up the strings a bit more than if it was inside.

Inside, you can hang these from a hook, a light fixture or doorway. Spook your guests with hanging spiders!
