Britney & Justin Take Halloween 2016

Halloween was Saturday and, needless to say, we had a blast. I spent the week leading up to the holiday working on our costumes and they turned out better than I could have ever imagined.

In case you missed the reference (you aren't the only one), we were Britney Spears & Justin Timberlake at the 2001 VMAs.

The costumes were actually pretty simple to make but required a few thrift store stops. My dress is actually a two piece. The top was cut from a short sleeve button down that was approximately my size. I put the top on backwards and inside out and had Sean trace a sweetheart neckline onto it. I cut and hemmed the neckline and took the sides in so that it would sat up without straps.

My skirt started as a denim maxi skirt that I work backwards so that the zipper was behind me. I cut the hem to a jagged shape and sewed on patches of random other colored denim. The miscellaneous denim was from several large pairs of jeans that I picked up at various thrift shops.

Sean's jeans were a thrift store find as well. I used bleach diluted 50% with water and a foam paint brush to create the bleached stripes on the legs.

His jacket was really fun to make. I was upset that I couldn't find a mens denim jacket at any of five thrift stores. However, this ended up being even better. I used the body of a light denim short sleeve button down, attached the sleeves of another long sleeved denim button down, and created a denim lapel by tracing the shape onto dar denim and sewing it onto the shirt. I just folded over the buttons and button holes of the button down and hemmed it to have a slightly curved shape at the bottom (I used one of his regular blazers as a template).

Sean took common of his hat. It's the same hat he wore as the man in the yellow hat and as a lighting bolt last year. He just used hot glue to attach a patchwork of denim to it.

Of course, I blinged everything out with rhinestones and our accessories were just the icing on the cake (including this awesome wig!)

We spent Halloween night having dinner with another couple and then Crawling with the Creeps in Avondale. It was a fun party that we have been to before, but it really took on a club/dance party vibe this year. We had a great time dancing late into the night!

I did get the reference (I'm old, that was contemporary back in the day, lol). The costumes turned out great!
