How to make a football field tray

All you need is a rectangular tray (this was a wooden one from a craft store under $5) and a small amount of astroturf. You can pick this up on Amazon, but they also have it at your local home improvement store and you can buy a much smaller piece.

I got a whole roll of it and plan on making several football themed “grass” serving pieces this season.

Step one: prepare tray

First, I spray painted my tray white. This was totally optional but it gave it the look that I was going for.

You could choose to paint the tray to match the team you’re rooting for or to match your existing decor. Either way, this is easy to make your own.

Step two: cut astroturf

Next, I cut a rectangle of astroturf the size of the tray and just sat it inside. You could hot glue the turf down if you want to keep it as a football tray forever, but if you might want to use the tray differently, make the turf removable.

Step three: attach yard lines

Next, I used white ribbon to create “yard lines” going across the “field.”

Players beware – this field is not to scale 🙂

For these, I simply put a small bead of hot glue along the back of the ribbon and then laid it down on the turf.
