Painting our Bathroom Vanity

Want to paint your bathroom vanity? Here’s how we did it!

It’s amazing what a little paint can do. Last week, we told you about how we scraped and painted the popcorn ceilings in our master bathroom. That was just phase one of our mini master bathroom makeover. We had to paint the walls too and update some 90’s things, but we also couldn’t let the big golden oak vanity sit there.

90’s brown wood was not going to work for us in our colorful, coastal spa of a bathroom. Down the road, we’d love to completely redo the bathroom, including a new vanity (one that wasn’t built for toddlers), but we decided for now to paint our bathroom vanity.

We also painted our kitchen cabinets and shared a ton of tips!

Picking a cabinet color

It was really simple. We chose a color that was very very similar to our new sheets to try to tie the two rooms together. The paint is Valspar Cabinet Enamel and we used about 1/2 a quart on the entire project. The color is Watery Blue (Olympic). The walls are Symphony of Blues which is a darker shade on the same strip. I love pairing multiple shades of the same color!

I started then by taking off all the drawers and doors. We took those to the garage to paint them there after sanding them down.

We obviously had to paint the vanity in place, but it works much better to take off the doors and drawers and paint them on their own. I ended up having to do four coats of paint on everything because it was a light mint color and you could see the wood still through a couple of coats.

We also sprayed the hardware chrome. This gave them a modern look to go over the brass that had been there for 20 years.

Before re-installing the doors onto the freshly painted vanity, we wanted to add knobs because there weren’t any at all before. They were the kind of doors that have recessed handles to pull. That’s ghetto. We ordered these really cool clear knobs with seeded bubbles inside and lined them up evenly to pull from the same place on each door and drawer.

We put everything back together and it looks amazing!

Painting the bathroom vanity and adding cool knobs is really bringing the bathroom that spa-like feel. We love how it turned out!
