Replacing a Toilet Pump

We had a problem last week when the toilet in the guest bathroom was leaking from the top of the toilet bowl whenever you flushed it. Wait, what, how does it leak from the top?

Yeah, so the pump on the inside was spraying up against the top of the bowl and running down the side of the toilet tank. Not good. I tried to fix the pump that was in there but I couldn’t get it to stop spraying up so I just went and got a new one.

What is a toilet pump?

A toilet pump is also known as a fill valve.

Toilet pumps are tubes that run vertically along the wall of the toilet tank. It is connected to a ball float or a cup style float that floats along the valve tube.

The one that was currently in our toilet had the floating ball, but I found out that they don’t really sell those anymore. The new toilet pumps all have just a single pump that is one piece.

Where can I buy a new toilet pump?

Toilet pumps are sold at all hardware stores. You can always order one on Amazon!

How to replace a toilet pump

For best results, read and following the instructions on your pump packaging.

To replace it, I started by turning off the water and flushing down the water that was in the bowl. Then, I disconnected the old pump from the toilet tank, but made sure to have a bowl to catch the excess water.

The new pump is really easy to install once the old one is out. They are adjustable, so just make sure it is set to the point that will stop the water from filling up.

You want to leave about an inch between the spot where you set the float and the top of the tube.

I promise it’s a very easy thing to do and not very disgusting. Who knows, eventually, toilet pumps might not even be necessary…
