How to make DIY rope coasters – no sew!

Want to add a coastal touch to your home decor? Here’s how to make DIY rope coasters – no sewing required!

I love a nautical aesthetic in our home, and that means that I do a lot of crafts with rope!

This project was inspired by this, this, and this.

I was motivated to get a jump on it when we redid this side table that Sean found in the dumpster and I wanted to be able to sit a glass on it without ruining the finish.

So, we grabbed a spool of Twisted Sisal Rope. From there, all we did was spiral and hot glue, spiral and hot glue.

This is a super simple craft idea and a great way to add a coastal aesthetic to your home – no sewing required!

It’s easier than you would believe to make simple, no sew rope coasters.

Steps to make DIY coasters:

STEP 1: Start at the center

Start at the center of the spiral. Apply hot glue to the end of the rope and fold it on itself.

STEP 2: Roll outwards

Keep adding hot glue and spiral the rope around itself to create a circular spiral. Work about 1 inch at a time.

STEP 3: Repeat

Continue until you get the coaster to your desired size – usually around 3 inches across.

It helps to press the coaster flat between your palm and the tabletop as you go to be sure it is staying flat and level.

STEP 4: Cut

Cut the excess rope when you are happy with the size. Use glue to attach the end of the rope to the side of the coaster.

STEP 5: Clean up

Let dry and then remove all glue strings. You can also blast it with a hair dryer to melt any tiny stringy bits.

They turned out so great! Each one took less than fifteen minutes (while watching Glee!) and was dry and ready to use instantly.

We also gave each one a little “haircut” to trim some of the extra hairs. We left some short ones for the rustic look, but still cleaned them up a bit.

Just make an effort to keep it very even so it will lay flat, and go easy on the hot glue or it can squirt out thru the cracks.
