DIY Melted Crayon Art

So, I recently got 3 big wooden frames from ReTail. You already saw what I did with the medium sized one, so here is what I did with the largest frame.
I have been feeling super inspired by Pinterest lately, and have gotten interested in melted crayon art. Lots of different projects have inspired me but I felt most inspired by the picture with the umbrella. So, I decided to try to make some melted crayon art with an umbrella myself!

I bought 2 packs of crayons and pulled out all the blues (and a couple of grays). The most time consuming and annoying part of this project was peeling off all the wrappers. They didn’t peel too well and I got wax all up under my nails. But, I was able to watch house hunters at the same time, so I can’t really complain.

I once again used foamboard as a canvas (in case this “experimental technique” turned out too wonky), sketched my kissing couple, and taped it off with thin cardboard (from a popcorn box).

Now comes the fun- I bought this Low Temp hot glue gun from walmart for $2.50. Definitely a good idea if you don’t want to ruin the one you have. Then I loaded in a crayon, just like I would the glue stick.
**It’s worth noting here that a lot of people on Pinterest glue crayons onto canvas and use a hair dryer to melt them. This is okay, but I didn’t want crayons on my canvas, plus this technique seemed more fun!

Be careful- it seriously turns to liquid. You won’t even need to pull the trigger. I then dripped wax down my canvas until I got the desired result.

See how the cardboard catches the wax? carefully peel off the tape and you should have a clean line.

I thought you might see the texture on the umbrella crayon art better from this angle.

And here’s the finished crayon melting art project. I love it!

Love this! I've seen these before but never really wanted any for myself- this one is actually super cute-love the kissing couple!

Thanks Megan! I thought it was cute and whimsical. You could also try a smaller version if you didn't want it to be a focal point... Or even experiment with the technique on a totally new medium. I've thought it might look cool dripping down a flower pot or vase! Happy crafting :)

really cool! I have been meaning to try this project but it keeps getting pushed back...I like that you can use a glue gun instead of a hair dryer!

It's really easy, you should try it! Just don't use your good glue gun :)
